Spider-Man Has Officially Joined The MCU!

By on February 9, 2015

It has finally, and officially, happened. Sony and Marvel Entertainment have reached an agreement to integrate Spider-Man into the MCU. I honestly don’t know if I ever took any of the rumors seriously, and did not expect it to happen this quickly, but I’m glad that it has.

Spider-Man is arguably Marvel’s biggest commodity, and the opportunity to see him on-screen as an Avenger is something I think we’ve all been hoping for. Just the story-arcs and new characters that can now be used in the MCU are priceless.

What is being reported is that a new Spider-Man (and as an Andrew Garfield supporter, I must say that if true it is disappointing, but I guess someone has to take one for the team) will be featured in an upcoming Marvel movie – Civil War seems the logical choice, but maybe too soon – and then will receive his own feature film on July 28, 2017. The film will be produced by Amy Pascal and by Kevin Feige, which is also exciting news and we all know he knows how to steer a franchise.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said,

“Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s great characters, beloved around the world. We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.”

Squeezing in the new Spider-Man movie will cause Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther and Captain Marvel to all have their release dates bumped back, and though both parts of Marvel’s Infinity War will stay with their original release dates, The Inhumans will also be bumped back now and not be released until after Infinity War is released.
